Food Scraps & Recycling Program Intern – El Dorado County

Overview:
Breathe California Sacramento Region is a nonprofit organization focused on advocating for clean air and healthy lungs. We are looking to hire a Food Scraps & Recycling Program Intern who will work under direct supervision of the Food Scraps & Recycling Program Managers to support the successful implementation of food scraps recycling initiatives mandated under SB 1383. This will involve actively participating in educational efforts, outreach events, and monitoring lunchtime activities in several school districts. Responsibilities will include developing or revising collateral materials, crafting engaging social media posts, and conducting outreach activities focused on promoting air quality education. There will be ample opportunities to collaborate with multiple school districts, engage with students and the local community in the El Dorado County region, provide on-site technical assistance, participate in outreach events, and contribute to the day-to-day operations of the programs.
Key Responsibilities:
· Design and update educational, marketing, and toolkit materials
· Be comfortable with engaging in community and outreach events (with and without supervision)
· Provide ongoing support to schools and program participants in diverse communities
· Stay up to date with research on air quality, food waste issues, and relevant state laws
Required Skills and Experience:
· Passionate and basic understanding of food waste and air quality related issues
· Strong interpersonal, listening, speaking, and written communication skills
· Ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects/tasks at once
· Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
Knowledge of Google Drive, Microsoft Office Suite, and Zoom
Desired Qualifications:
· Patience and understanding towards a diverse range of demographics
o Ex. School-aged children, older adults, public officials, and non-native English speakers
· Ability to interpret state laws and mandates
· Communication skills with at least one year of customer service experience
· Open to public speaking and training large groups
· Familiarity with Canva
· Comfortable with remote working and in-person/on-site work
o Applicant must have a valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation

Position Information
BREATHE is looking to fill one (1) internship position beginning in September 2024 through June 2025. This is a part-time position not to exceed 20 hours per week with an hourly rate of $18-20 per hour depending on experience. The selected candidate will primarily be working in the El Dorado County region. Additionally, it is a hybrid position with the occasional option to work remotely from home and in the office or at school sites Monday – Friday when appropriate (approximately 75% in office/site visits and 25% remote). This position does require frequent site visits during lunchtime at schools throughout the academic year. Therefore, the ideal candidate should have open availability Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Applicants should be comfortable carpooling with a coworker on a regular basis to site visits throughout El Dorado County. Applicants for this position must be non-smokers, including E-cigarettes and vaping.
